This paper aims to give a general overview of the contents and the process of the draft of the Inter-American Convention on Protecting the Human Rights of Older Persons, approved by the
Organisation of American States on 15 June 2015, in order to stress its significance and encourage action from the interested parties, in particular, the holders of these rights. To this end, I review the various stages of negotiation and elaboration of this Convention, and also analyse its innovative content of rights, which I have classified in three groups –emerging, extended, and current. Finally, I discuss to the follow-up mechanisms established by the Convention and reflect on the importance of approving the Convention.
