Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to highlight the role played by the Spanish diplomats in favor of the Sephardic communities of Greece during the first third of the 20th century through the diplomatic correspondence. This is a period accounted for, as it coincides with the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the transfer of Thessaloniki to Greece at the end of the Balkan wars in 1913, the First World War, the occupation and defeat of Greece and Asia Minor and the First Greek Republic. As for the used sources, since Spain was neutral and lacked interest in the area, the diplomatic correspondence has been fundamental to know objectively the difficulties of the Sephardic communities of Greece during this time, providing useful information about certain facts occurred in the country, almost unknown or not researched far by specialists.
