CASE SERIES REPORT: DEPRESCRIPTION OF BENZODIAZEPINES IN OLDER ADULTS WITH INSOMNIA

Authors

Abstract

Introduction: benzodiazepines are a widely used family of drugs. Despite what is known and recommended for its use in short periods of time to manage insomnia; In many of these cases, its prescription has been prolonged, finally constituting a chronic treatment that is not exempt from adverse effects, especially in older people. Motivations: Although there are protocols regarding the prescription of benzodiazepines, there are few positive experiences regarding the deprescription of these drugs in older people with insomnia. Objective: To present a case series report of a pharmacological deprescription intervention focused on six elderly people with dependence on benzodiazepines, without psychiatric comorbidity, which consisted of conducting structured informative counseling, carried out by a Family Medicine Resident, followed by the objectification of the evolution of the cases through four instruments in order to measure daytime sleepiness, severity of insomnia, quality of sleep and latency and hours of sleep. Findings: At the end of the intervention, effective deprescription was obtained in five of the six patients evaluated, achieving in all of them an improvement in the applied instruments, results that were maintained until the closing of this report. Conclusions: This case series report allows us to glimpse a feasible and replicable alternative to implement in primary health care, highlighting the figure of the family doctor in increasing the resolution capacity of the system.
